A new and fully revised edition of my 2020 "Inks & Paints of the Middle East", with 12 extra pages.

A handbook of materials and book arts technology of the medieval Islamic world, for artists and art lovers alike.

138 highly visual pages, tightly packed with art materials, terminology, recipes and other art technology from the Abbasid period, also known as the Golden Age of Islam. Based on original research from untranslated primary sources, it also represents the first time this material was examined by a practitioner of the craft. Nearly all the recipes included were first tested in the studio. Whether you have a specific interest in codicology, a general interest in art history, or want to work with these materials yourself, this book is a mine of scholarly and practical information.

The format is A5, wire-bound to be totally practical to use in the studio.

Great Resource for Inkmaking Technology History and Practice

I've been making ink as a historical and creative practice for several years. I found this resource incredible generous in its information and the instructions seem very easy to follow. I also appreciate the references to historical texts and Arabic translations to give context to the practical applications.
