A free neutron has a half-life of about 10 minutes. It undergoes beta decay by emitting an electron. Can a free proton undergo a similar decay?
a) Yes, the same decay
b) Yes, but by emitting a postiron
c) Yes, but with a different half-life
d) No
I am leaning toward d) for the following reasons;
a) is just wrong. b) I'm thinking conservation of mass and/or energy might be violated. c) the estimated shortest possible half-life of a proton is many times longer than the age of the universe (somewhere around 1034 years or more) and I have only found text stating proton decay has ever been observed.
