Paul Klee (1879-1940) was born in Bern (Switzerland). In the family of a music teacher. He was musically gifted. He played the violin. In his youth, he sometimes played in an orchestra to earn some money. But he decided not to make a career in music. Considering that he desided that in this field already Mozart and Bach reached the top. But in the painting is still where to go. Thanks to his passion for etchings, he invented his own technique - needle engraving on glass.
Klee did not stop at the education he received in Munich. He persisted in self-education. Klee believed that "the artist must be a poet, a philosopher, and a naturalist."
So was Klee. He was a musician, an artist, and a writer. His diary, which he led all his life, made him the most studied artist of the 20th century. He is recognized as the most educated of his colleagues.
At the age of 27 he married a German pianist and moved again to Munich. His wife will be his only woman for life. However, their family was unusual. She worked while he was at home. He was engaged in painting, but his work has not yet been bought.
Even when their son Felix was born, his wife continued to work. Glory will overtake him only to 40 years. Until then - he is financially dependent on his wife. But this did not prevent them from being happy in marriage.
In 32 years, Klee met with leading artists: Kandinsky, Mondrian. He finds understanding among them. After all he, just like them, wants to transfer the inner essence of the world onto paper or canvas. Closing his eyes on the outer shell.
A trip to Tunisia finally formed Klee as an outstanding colorist. From now on, the color for him - the main thing. Klee himself said: “To write means only one thing: to place the right color in the right place.”
Klee was very versatile. Sometimes he created a new world that lives by its own laws. It was a complete lack of visualization. It seems that Klee is an abstractionist. But no. Sometimes objects of the real world appeared in his works. But only to be part of another world. Due to such paintings, the Surrealists called Klee one of their founders. In fact, Klee did not belong to any direction of modernism. Often his work is difficult to adjust to a specific direction.
 In the 20s glory comes to Klee. Then he is invited to teach at the Bauhaus . Here he inspired his students that only spiritual and intuitive is important in art.
Here he also teaches the art of working with glass. Including the creation of stained glass. Some of his paintings really look like stained glass.
Klee was fascinated by the working capacity of Van Gogh, who painted one picture in 1-2 days. And also sought to work "not a day without a line". As a result, he left a huge legacy. More than 10,000 works!.
In 1933 Nazis come to power. They are forcing many avant-gardists to leave Germany. Klee went to Bern. To the city where he was born and applied for citizenship. Received rejection. From the second attempt, he was given citizenship. But got it too late. A few days after death.
Klee died at 61 years old. The last year of his life he was dying from a painful illness. When every movement is a great pain. Spent this year in bed. And during this time he created 1200 works. Not a day without a line!
