Kuzma Sergeyevich Petrov-Vodkin (24 October 1878, Khvalynsk – 15 February 1939, Leningrad) was a Russian painter and writer, teacher and graphic artist. In the variety of European and Russian artistic movements of the early XX century, Petrov-Vodkin found similar ideas, but always adhered to his own pictorial manner. He is a lone artist, a cosmopolitan and an eternal tramp who searched for universal meanings in every nation, in its traditions and directions of development.Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin is a man of the earth. Stepping firmly and growing into the ground with his steps, he felt a connection to it. In the African deserts and on the viscous ashes of Vesuvius, on the Breton forests and dusty roads of Samarkand, he laid with his feet invisible, winding lines, stitching together the universal truth, once lost, divided into national features and traditions.
