Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (July 17, 1796, Paris - February 22, 1875, Paris) was an outstanding French painter, recognized by critics and viewers as the "king of the landscape" during his lifetime.

Features of the work of Camille Corot: the desire to depict ordinary and modest nature without salon pomposity, careful observation of the changing states of nature. The color scheme used by Corot is often built on the finest gradations of the same color (the artist’s favorite phrase is “valirs first of all”). The landscapes of Corot prompted French painting to turn from the "historical" narrative landscape, painted according to academic rules, to a more realistic landscape based on direct live observation of nature. The artist is considered the creator of the "mood landscape" and the direct predecessor of the Impressionists, whose work Corot, however, did not accept. In the second half of his life, Corot also painted portraits, mostly of women.
