Join some of the History and Heritage Yorkshire contributors this Yorkshire Day as we explore together the rich past of Pontefract – one of Yorkshire’s most historic market towns.

Wander through streets steeped in history, with names like Beastfair, Cornmarket, Gillygate, Micklegate, and Ropergate, once central to medieval market life. North Baileygate and Skinner Lane hint at later chapters in the town’s story, the latter running past the former rifle volunteer barracks.

Discover the ruins of one of England’s most infamous castles and visit the remarkable churches of St Giles and All Saints, both of which have witnessed key moments in national history. Explore the site of the old hermitage and stroll through the elegant Georgian marketplace. With its wealth of heritage, independent shops, cafés, and bars, Pontefract promises a memorable day out.
