Instrumentation: Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello

Duration: ~ 5'

Difficulty level: advanced - professional

This piece was written in 2019 for the Frost School of Music Jazz Septet under the direction of Charles Bergeron, and was only later adapted for string quartet in 2022. It is an exploration of odd time signatures and repetitive motives cycling through complex modern jazz harmonies, and should be played with constant forward momentum. In rehearsals I would recommend repeating small sections to get used to the rhythmic feel before reading the piece all the way through. While it may look complex at first, the rhythms should flow effortlessly once you have them in your ear. Safety First will make a challenging addition to any string quartet's repertoire as an energetic opener or closer. It is intended for progressive groups looking to branch more into contemporary jazz and improvised music.
