Maryland was founded by the Calverts as a refuge for English Catholics, and then, by law, stripped those same Catholics of the right to vote, to hold office, and to practice law. It is one of the great ironies of colonial history, and the backdrop for four remarkable signers.

This guide introduces them. Samuel Chase was a forceful, flawed man, the only Supreme Court Justice ever impeached, acquitted in a verdict that helped protect judicial independence. William Paca was the steady one. Thomas Stone declined the Constitutional Convention to stay with his dying wife and died, by many accounts, of grief four months after she did. Charles Carroll of Carrollton was among the wealthiest men in America, barred from politics his whole life because of his faith, and signed his name knowing he had more to lose than almost anyone in the room.
