Pennsylvania sent nine signers, the largest delegation in the project, and they span the widest range of any colony. Founded by William Penn on liberty of conscience, Pennsylvania was also the hardest colony to bring to independence, torn between Quaker pacifism and revolutionary conviction.

This guide introduces all nine. Benjamin Franklin at seventy was the oldest signer and the most famous American alive. Robert Morris put his own fortune behind the Revolution and lost everything. Benjamin Rush called himself a Christocrat and helped found American psychiatry. John Morton cast the deciding vote for Pennsylvania, was shunned by his neighbors, and left a deathbed prophecy.
