When You And I Were Young, Maggie

Here's Fats performing the old classic pop song "When You And I Were Young, Maggie" from the Lang-Worth transcription session of 1939. As in previous transcription sessions (see previous videos), we have the luxury of Fats alone at the piano. To think that such an old classic song could ever be delivered with such bluesy swing and fervour is testimony to Fats' genius.

Fats again delivers an outstanding vocal performance, hamming it up and singing his heart out as the performance climaxes. In the piano solo sections, the tune is given a total stride makeover and is a joy to behold but even in the non-stride piano moments [e.g. at B], there is much to enjoy in Fats' simple yet masterful harmonic realisation of the tune.
