Do you ever wonder why you sometimes react in ways you don’t fully understand?

Why in certain situations you feel calm, confident, and in control — yet in others you feel overwhelmed, reactive, or as though your responses are beyond your control?

Why it can feel as though the people around you simply don’t understand your perspective?

This is often the Defender doing exactly what it was designed to do: protecting you from perceived harm.

The difficulty is not that the Defender exists — it’s that the Defender learns.

Its reactions are shaped by past experiences, using history to predict the present moment. As far as the Defender is concerned, it is doing its job well.

But the past cannot predict the future. It can inform us, guide us, and offer insight —but it cannot dictate here and now.

At times, the Defender doesn’t recognise this distinction and responds to assumptions rather than facts.

Understanding your Defender is often the first step toward meaningful change.

The Defender takes its cues from your Self-State — a deeply embedded internal lens shaped by earlier interactions and experiences. To add to the complexity, The Defender reactions are frequently accompanied by the Villain’s Voice: the internal critical narrative that speaks in judgement, certainty, and threat.

The programmes on The Causation Series, give you a clear and in-depth understanding of:

  • Self-States
  • Defender Positions
  • The Villain’s Voice

And how these systems interact to shape behaviour.
