Savannah Cowl

A Savannah is a mixed woodland, grassland ecosystem. The trees are far enough apart to have lots plenty of grass and small plants in between. Very typical in parts of Africa.

I wanted my last design in South Africa to be something that reflected this great country of my birth, which I love so much. This wonderful yarn reminded me of the African grasslands, the often very dry Savannah. I know that I will miss the smell of rain on African soil and watching the landscape transform from brown to green again after the rains.

A very big part of my heart with always be here in my home country.

Description

This cowl is knitted flat starting with a provisional cast on. There is a i-cord edge on each side for a neat finish. The pattern is a 15-row repeat, very soon you will intuitively know what comes next. All the wrong side rows are knit the knits and purl the purls.

The finished size of this pattern is totally customisable, you can use 1, 2 or 3 skeins to reach the length that you like best. Choose between 3 needle bind off or grafting techniques to close the cowl when you are happy with the length.

DK weight yarn 240g; 510m/558yds

Sample knitted in Hartlam, Tulbagh DK; 80% Super Wash Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon

Cotton on bamboo waste yarn for the provisional cast on.

Gauge

22 stitches and 29 rows over 10cm/4” stocking stitch knit flat, blocked.

Gauge is not crucial in this pattern; however, it will affect the overall finished size of your cowl and the amount of yarn that you use.

Size

One size: Finished dimensions 21cm/8” wide and 135cm/53” long before grafting closed.
