A Little Bit About This Design

This pattern was designed as part of the Halloween Mosaic Crochet Blanket CAL

hosted by Jamie Morris from Remington Lane Crochet

I wanted to design a strip that would fit with the Halloween theme, but would be a little different. As a former art teacher I am really interested in the arts, and textiles of other cultures and have always been fascinated by the Latin American celebration of The Day Of The Dead (Dia De Los Muertos), so it was an obvious choice for inspiration! This festival, most commonly associated with Mexico celebrates, honours and remembers the lives of loved ones who have passed over, believing they return to the world of the living on that night to visit their families. It is a joyful celebration involving, sharing food, stories and offerings both with the living and the dead, featuring sugar skull sweets, marigold flowers and in more recent times, parades of papier mache puppets of skeletons. I love the idea that the events focus on celebration rather than sadness.

PATTERN NOTES

YARNS USED - Any DK (Light Worsted) in 2 colours

Quantities vary depending on number of repeats

HOOK SIZE = 5MM (US H/8)

OTHER MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT

SCISSORS

STITCHMARKERS

YARN DARNING NEEDLE

GUAGE - 18st X 18r = 4 inches approx using DK acrylic yarn

SIZE (of one repeat) 

Approx 10.5 x 7.5 inches /27 x 17cm

(not including edge tassels)

Chart is worked from the bottom up, starting in the bottom right hand corner and working individual rows always from right to left on the right side only.

This pattern is a 30 row overlay mosaic chart, with 48 stitch repeat (plus 3st = 1 buffer stitch and 1 start and end of row stitch) So if you want to make a 3 motif repeat which fits a standard single blanket width, your starting chain stitch count will be 49 x 3 = 147 plus 2 = 149 plus 1st turning chain = ch 150

2 Colour Overlay Mosaic Technique

This project is worked in the Overlay Mosaic crochet technique whereby the colours alternate each row, joining at the beginning with a slst, and fastening off at the end of each row, forming side 'fringes'. Edge stitches are worked as sc in both loops. The pattern is worked in BLOsc for all stitches except the 'overlay' stitches which are worked as FLOdc into the FLO of the stitch 2 rows below, thus covering over the stripe of the alternative-coloured row in those sections. All rows are worked from the RS.
