Mixoydian: Progressions, Dominant Chords and the Flat 7th
If you play blues or rock, you already play Mixolydian. You just don’t know when you’re doing it. You slide a C up to C# over an A7 and it sounds right. Then you play the same thing over an E chord and it doesn’t, and you’re not sure why.
Most mode books won’t help. They’ll tell you A Mixolydian is the D major scale starting on A. It’s correct, and it’s no use when you’re holding a guitar.
This book starts somewhere else. Mixolydian is the major scale with one note changed. In A, that’s G instead of G#. That one note is what makes A7 an A7, what turns A to G to D into a rock song, and what makes a major key sound like the blues. The book is about knowing when that note fits, when it clashes, and doing something deliberate with it.
What’s inside:
- A one-note test that tells you whether Mixolydian fits any progression
- The rock cadence: why A, G, D, A gets home without the V chord, and how to move it to any key
- Triads over an open string, the trick behind a lot of classic rock rhythm parts
- Dominant chords that stay interesting: A7, A7sus4, A13 and A9, and the one-note moves that keep sixteen bars of one chord alive
- Four one-octave patterns that run from root to root, so you always know where home and the G are
- The 3rd mix: when the minor 3rd works over a dominant chord, when it clashes, and why the same note is home over the next chord
- Ten soloing rules in place of licks, each one built to fix a specific habit
- Mixolydian and Dorian: the one note that separates them, and how to switch
- Blues, rock, and country and folk: the chords, the comping and the soloing for each
- Twelve vamps to play over, with tempos and feels, plus a template for writing your own
- Mixolydian in all twelve keys
What isn’t inside: licks, transcriptions, full-neck box charts, or a lecture on how modes are derived.
Everything is in A, the same key as the Dorian book, so the open A string gives you a free drone. Every diagram uses the same colour code, with the root in black and the Mixolydian note outlined, so you can see what matters before you read a word.
