When confronted with a transcription of his own improvised solo to perform, jazz legend Charlie Parker simply laughed in the face of his interviewer and stated 'I can't play that!'. Lines between captures the sense of spontaneity and excitement in melodic bebop lines but develops it through techniques associated with classical music. These melodic lines are often played in rhythmic unison, creating a tension between the sense of the improvised and the knowledge that the performers are working together off the page. Like a jazz standard, the structure of the piece also involves instruments taking solos and the trio working together.
