My yearning to connect back to my cultural heritage, in true Seeker Fibre Muse sense, was the idea that prompted this design, and the other designs in this quarterly collection. The colorwork design is based off a traditional geometric wave motif found in Maori weaving. Karekare is Te Reo Maori for wave, but can also mean “choppy or rough waters.”

Growing up, I had my fair share of rough waters to navigate and even to this day I still struggle with questions of identity: who am I? Where do I come from? Can I belong somewhere? Despite the fear of rejection and not being enough, I decided to not let the waters extinguish my desire to share my story as a bi-racial, multicultural WoC trying to find where she fits in in the world.

Karekare is designed for any Seeker Fibre Muse who feels like they don’t belong, caught between two spaces where they don’t quite fit, yearning for a place to be. We all have our stormy seas to battle, but don’t let it extinguish your fire. Keep seeking your place.

CONSTRUCTION
This yoke pullover is worked bottom-up, in the rnd. There is some short row shaping worked at the end around the back of the neck for a better fit around the shoulders. For best fit, select the pattern measurements that 2 - 4 in./5 cm - 10 cm more than your actual size. See the image for the sizing.

YARN

• See table for yardages for each size (image included).
• DK/8-ply
• This yarn is incredibly soft and blocks so beautifully.
• Pichinku Iskay (100% Peruvian Baby Alpaca; 100 g; 236 yd./225 m). 4 skeins in Undyed (MC), 1 skein in Nube (lavender), 1 skein in Red (C2).

NEEDLES

• US 6 (4 mm), US 7 (4.5 mm), US 8 (5 mm) or sizes needed to obtain gauge, 32 in./80 cm circular needles: one for the body and another for the sleeves to work magic loop.

GAUGE

• 21.5 sts and 28 rows over 4 in./10 cm in St. st. with US 7/mm and after blocking.

NOTIONS

• Stitch markers

• Darning/tapestry needle
