The programme, the progress tracker, the site report and the H&S/CDM paperwork — in one Excel file, with your logo on it.

You can build — that's never the question. The question is whether you can prove it, before, during and after the job, without it eating your evenings. Every job needs a programme the client believes, a progress update you can send without a Sunday-night panic, a weekly H&S check that isn't a scrap of paper in the van, and a straight answer to "is this notifiable to the HSE?" This toolkit is that whole document set in one place.

What it is: a single Excel workbook — software you already have, no subscription, no login. Fill in five cells on the cover tab and the rest builds itself around your job. It comes set up as a worked kitchen-refurb example so you can see how it behaves, then you clear it and drop in your own trades — or use one of the three ready-made sequences inside. The same file runs one kitchen or a full major-works programme with forty activities and six trades on site.

What's inside — 8 tabs:

1. Cover / Set-up — type the client, project, type, start date and description once; the rest of the workbook auto-populates.

2. Programme / Gantt — enter activities, trade, duration and what each follows; the dates and Gantt bars calculate themselves, skipping weekends and UK bank holidays.

3. Progress Tracker — type a % against each task and the bars shade themselves, with an overall contract % weighted by task length — one number you can defend to a client.

4. Site Progress Report — a written report template, part auto-filled from the workbook, so your weekly update isn't a blank page.

5. H&S Weekly Checklist — 58 real site checks across pre-start, weekly and high-risk, with statutory items flagged "STAT", one tick column per week — a running record.

6. Project Team + CDM 2015 — a contact directory, plain-English duty-holder responsibilities, and a built-in F10 calculator that tests whether your project is notifiable to the HSE.

7. Programme Templates — three ready-made trade sequences (kitchen, whole-house, major works) to drop straight into the Gantt.

8. Your branding, throughout — add your logo once and it carries through every programme, report and checklist you issue.

Also included — the Subcontractor Tender Pack. Three extra files for getting a package priced properly: a Scope of Works & Specification (PDF) so everyone prices the same job; a Tender Pricing Schedule / BoQ (Excel) with item, description, unit, quantity and rate, subtotals and a grand total that add themselves up; and a Tender Cost Comparison (Excel) that puts your budget alongside four contractors side by side, with a column for notes and exclusions. Plus the Document Register (Excel) for keeping track of drawing and document revisions.

Who it's for: small and medium builders and contractors who want to turn up to a tender or client meeting looking like a bigger, better-run outfit; housing-association clerks of works and contracts officers tracking contractor progress; and RMC/RTM directors running major works who need to show a real programme and a real progress figure.

Formats: the Excel workbook + an illustrated User Guide (PDF). Works in any current desktop version of Excel. One purchase, unlimited projects, no subscription.

Please note: this is a planning and record-keeping tool, not legal, H&S or CDM advice, and not a substitute for a competent person's sign-off. It's a well-built starting point that will save you hours and make your paper trail better than most sites manage. Use your own judgement and take professional advice where the job or the risk calls for it.

NEW - now includes the Document Register. A separate Excel register for tracking every drawing and document issued on the job: document number, type, revision, status, date issued and who it went to. The record that settles arguments about what was sent and when. Added at no extra cost.
