For everyone who is tired — not of God, but of trying so hard.

Resting in Grace is about radical grace: a love that did not wait for you to become acceptable. This is not a book about religion, and it is open to everyone: the believer, the doubter, the seeker, and anyone who has been hurt by religion. If you have prayed, practised and searched for years and still feel that peace is always one more effort away, this audiobook was recorded for you. What you have been searching for may already be holding you.

"I was not saved by becoming spiritually impressive. I was met where I could no longer carry myself." — from the Epilogue

What you will find inside

Ben Hassine wrote this book out of a season of loss, when his own life came apart. In five parts and seven unhurried chapters, he walks with you out of the machinery of striving and into rest:

  • The Great Lie and The False Witness: the burden from behind and the merit driving from ahead, and how together they keep the soul in exile.
  • The Body of Grace: the grace that is there before the first step.
  • The Gaze of the Sage and The Song of the Saint: two doorways, watchful awareness and devotion, opened side by side.
  • The Rope and the Snake: what happens to the world, the body and other people when awareness opens.
  • The Art of Return: teshuva, the turning home, as often as you need it.

At the centre stands Jesus: gentle, honest, deeply human, and nearer than the religious machinery built around his Name. The other wells (Torah and the Psalms, desert prayer, advaita, bhakti, the Sikh Naam) keep their own voice. The audiobook closes with an epilogue, a closing prayer, notes on the source texts, and a short glossary with a pronunciation guide.

Who it is for

For anyone worn out by religious pressure or by an endless spiritual path. For listeners drawn to the mystics, from the Christian and Jewish traditions to nonduality. For everyone who would like to listen unhurriedly, a chapter at a time, and breathe again.

About the author

Ben Hassine is a writer and video creator, and at heart a mystic. He is the founder of Afterglow Publishing House, an independent publishing house, and of its division ClarityOne, through which he reaches readers and listeners around the world with books and videos on YouTube.

Radical grace is his life's work: setting Jesus free from the religious cage, so that grace is open to everyone. His essays, books and videos keep returning to it. He reads closely in the source texts of the Christian and Jewish traditions, and also in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Advaita. His path is interfaith, yet never syncretic or New Age: each tradition keeps its own voice.

Resting in Grace is the prologue to Resting in Reality, the larger work still to come. He is also the author of The Shattering of Certainty (also available as an audiobook).
