4 variations for beginner to intermediate guitar players
I've been working on these 4 variations for some time now. My goal was to compose four neoclassical exercises that any beginner or intermediate guitar player could learn and genuinely benefit from. So don't expect a shred fest, neoclassical music is so much more than playing super fast.
But do expect to expand your picking technique, pedal tone technique, and sweep picking. You'll also get to work on your bends and vibrato. In neoclassical music, vibrato isn't just a detail, it's everything.
On top of that, you'll learn how the same chord progression can be approached with completely different techniques, opening up a whole new way of thinking about the fretboard.
Here's what you get with these 4 variations:
Variation 1. Melody, Dynamics & Vibrato
Learn how create different melodies using different techqniques over a single chord progression.
You’ll explore the same melody in different octaves for contrast and tension, while developing controlled, intentional vibrato, the difference between sounding mechanical and sounding expressive.
Variation 2 & 3. Pedal Tone (Neoclassical Essential)
The foundation of the neoclassical sound. You’ll anchor your playing around a pivot note while moving through a scale, a defining concept in the style of Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Paganini and guitar players like Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore. Step-by-step pre-exercises prepare you before you play the full variation.
Variation 4. Sweep Picking & Arpeggios
Sweep picking, when done cleanly, turns arpeggios into powerful musical statements.
You’ll learn the technique in isolated down and upstroke exercises before applying it musically within the chord progression.
The deeper lesson behind all four variations?
Every note has intention.
Every technique serves the music.
By the end, you won’t just play these variations, you’ll understand how to build your own melodies and use it in your improvisation.
