U.S. Citizenship Test Questions & Answers 2026–27

Complete 228-Question Civics Study Guide for the Naturalization Interview

Preparing for the U.S. Citizenship Test can feel overwhelming when you are trying to study American government, U.S. history, the Constitution, rights and responsibilities, geography, national symbols, and important dates all at once.

This comprehensive U.S. Citizenship Test Questions & Answers 2026–27 Study Guide brings together the two major USCIS civics-test question sets in one convenient resource: the 2025 Civics Test with 128 questions and the 2008 Civics Test with 100 questions.

That gives you a combined study resource containing 228 civics questions and answers to help you prepare for your USCIS naturalization interview and civics test.

Know Which Citizenship Test You Need

One of the most important things to understand before studying is that the civics-test version depends on the filing date of your Form N-400.

Applicants who filed their N-400 on or after October 20, 2025 take the newer 2025 Civics Test, which has 128 possible questions. During the naturalization interview, the USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions, and the applicant must answer at least 12 correctly.

Applicants who filed their N-400 before October 20, 2025 generally take the 2008 Civics Test, which contains 100 possible questions. The officer asks up to 10 questions, and the applicant must answer at least 6 correctly.

This guide includes both question sets so you can study the version that applies to your application.

65/20 Special Consideration

If you are 65 years old or older and have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for 20 or more years, USCIS provides special consideration for the civics test.

The applicable questions are identified in this study guide so eligible applicants can focus their preparation on the designated questions.

USCIS identifies special 65/20 questions in both the 2008 and 2025 materials.

Prepare for the Naturalization Interview

The civics test is part of the broader USCIS naturalization interview. The civics portion is an oral test, meaning you should practice hearing questions and answering them aloud rather than relying only on reading.

Use this guide to:

✓ Read each citizenship test question

✓ Review the accepted answer choices

✓ Practice answering aloud

✓ Memorize important U.S. government concepts

✓ Review American history

✓ Study the Constitution and Bill of Rights

✓ Learn important U.S. symbols and holidays

✓ Review rights and responsibilities

✓ Prepare for questions about your state and current officials

✓ Practice the 65/20 questions when applicable

The official USCIS materials emphasize that certain answers can change because of elections or appointments, so applicants should know the current answer at the time of their eligibility interview.
