THE WRIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY
The Life and Career of Johnny Wright, Co-Pioneer in Breaking Baseball’s Color Barrier
This is the story of John Richard Wright, who was the second child born to Richard Wright and Hazel Speed Wright on November 28, 1916, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He became a star in the world of Negro League baseball, where he was known as Johnny “Needle Nose” Wright. Soon after, he became one of two pioneers in white Organized Baseball.
On May 30, 2024, Major League Baseball announced it would officially incorporate statistics from the Negro Leagues into its record books. That means some of the greatest players from those leagues will now move into the top 10 ranks in the record books and they finally receive the recognition that they have long deserved.
