“If you are rich enough to travel first class and don’t, your inheritors will” says a lot more than the initial thought. It says if you are going to take a vacation, do it right. Go to the right destination for you based on why you are taking it, seeing it in the right way, going at the right time of year, and staying the right length of time.

Most of us, unless retired or a student, only get a limited annual vacation time and taking a vacation is one of the highlights of our year. We dream about it, ponder the location, shop for the right clothes, think forever what we should do and take, and save every dime we can to enjoy it. Then, we pray like mad that the vacation we end up with is the one we should have taken.

Sometimes, we are fortunate enough to take the right one. For example, we have always wanted to see the Great Wall of China. We see it, so we are happy. The trip was a success regardless of what other things might have happened while on it because we saw the “why” we traveled and experienced the main purpose of the trip. Sometimes, we are not quite as fortunate. When we return, we discover that the destination, time of year, hotel, etc. were not exactly the thing we needed to make this a trip of a lifetime and the trip does not leave us feeling elated.

I have found the best way to control or at least minimize the negative and accentuate the positive experiences and emotions while traveling is through knowledge and being prepared. The better prepared you are the less chance that things can go wrong.
