History and Heritage Yorkshire Magazine April 2025
Welcome to the April edition of History and Heritage Yorkshire magazine with another rich mix of stories that bring the region’s past to life. We shine a spotlight on two very different community-led heritage projects: the creation of a new Cemetery Heritage Trail in the former industrial town of Castleford, and the remarkable saving of the Rose Garden Café in Sheffield’s Graves Park.
You’ll also find a fascinating feature on Whitby’s maritime past, the history of St Agatha’s Abbey at Easby, the story behind James Herriot, and a look back to when Yorkshire was a centre of Christianity, conflict and learning. And with Easter just around the corner we haven’t forgotten the region’s seasonal customs and traditions.
As always, the magazine is available on a pay what you can basis — with no minimum amount. While contributions help sustain the magazine, I firmly believe that personal circumstances should never be a barrier to exploring history and heritage. This way, everyone can enjoy the stories of Yorkshire’s past.
