Data analysis with NVivo (2 x 1.5h workshops)
Summary:
A hands-on live Zoom training on how to use NVivo for data analysis, plus lifetime access to the recording for learning at your own pace later.
Whether you are completely new to NVivo, or have some previous experience with it, you will find this course both useful and enjoyable.
This is a practical, two-part NVivo training delivered live on Zoom across two 1.5-hour sessions.
I am a professional data analyst, research consultant, and academic tutor with 9 years of experience running a research consultancy and supporting projects across academia and industry. I will teach you complex ideas in a simple and approachable way.
This course has been delivered and well-received across universities such as University of Dundee, Cardiff University, and University of York, as well as dozens of private research teams and organisations.
By the end of the two sessions, you will not only know how to use NVivo’s core and advanced features, but also understand how NVivo fits into qualitative analysis as a whole, how it can genuinely enrich your work, and how to produce analysis that stands up to academic or professional scrutiny.
You will Learn how to:
- Use NVivo 15 (and earlier versions) for Qualitative data analysis
- Start a project and understand the layout of NVivo
- Import your data to NVivo
- Categorize your data into folders and cases
- Explore the data, make a note of your observations and link these notes to other elements of the project
- Code the data and create a thematic framework
- Create, delete, aggregate, merge, and rename your codes
- Create cases in NVivo
- Compare cases by attributes and values (e.g. did men and women express similar views?)
- Run Matrix Coding Query, Crosstab Query, Compound Query, Text Search, Word Frequency Query
- THINK like a professional qualitative researcher!
Most importantly, you will understand how NVivo can help you take your data analysis to a higher level, so that you can impress your supervisors, teachers, employers or colleagues with the depth of the analysis
Training content:
Session 1
Qualitative data analysis and the use of software
- What is qualitative data analysis about (a summary of the process of coding and thematic
analysis)
- Why do we need codes?
- How and when do codes become themes?
- What is the role of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) in data analysis?
- What does NVivo do and what does it NOT do
- At what stage of data analysis is it most useful
- Other reasons to learn to use NVivo (e.g. employability)
Basics of NVivo
- How to set up a new project
- How to import the data and organize it into sets and folders
- How to make notes in NVivo, and link these notes to the data
- How to code (how to create, delete, organize and “read” codes)
- How to export different elements of your project
Session 2
Continuing to code: when do we stop, and how codes become themes
How to develop a thematic framework from your codes
Cross- and within-case analysis in NVivo:
- How, and when to create “cases” in NVivo
- File/Case attributes and values, Classification sheets
- Matrix Coding Query
- Crosstab Query
- Compound Query
- Text-search and Word Frequency queries
Who this course is for:
- Those willing to learn to use NVivo for Qualitative data analysis (Beginner Level)
- Those who have already used this software but want to develop their skills further (Pre-intermediate Level)
- Students undertaking their Master's/PhD study
- Academics & Researchers wishing to improve their skill set
- Recent graduates wishing to increase their employability (being able to use NVivo is a valued skill in research and academic jobs)
Requirements
- NO data set is required (you will be provided with a sample data set to work with)
- Ideally, you should have a licensed copy of NVivo installed to follow along during the sessions. However, this is not essential - all participants receive a full recording, so you can revisit the material at any time
How it works
Once you purchase the training, you will receive a PDF with direct links to both live Zoom sessions (dates listed below). You will also get access to Word files containing example data used during the training, which you are free to use if you do not have your own data available.
Details:
When: March 10 (session 1), March 17 (session 2), 10:00 am GMT (UK time)
