Illustriation - Illusion Knit Shawl - PDF pattern

Is it narrow stripes? Or wide stripes? Or squares?

appears to have several shades of grey but only uses four different yarns. Anyone looking straight at the shawl will see wide bands of colour which are made up of narrow stripes. As the wearer turns a checkerboard effect comes in and out of view. The viewer will see something different from every angle.

The photos attempt to capture the different effects but they cannot recreate the effect of movement.

The shawl shown was made using DK yarn. It could be made in other yarns though this might change the overall size. The pattern includes information about other ways to change the size and how to reduce the width of the centre-back strip, should you wish to do that. It also explains how to use the pattern to create a colour-effect afghan.

It used

  • 120 metres of colour 1 (Light grey)
  • 170 metres of colour 2 (Medium grey)
  • 250 metres of colour 3 (Dark grey)
  • 380 metres of colour 4 (Black) plus extra for the border.
Any four colours could be used.

The finished size was 164 cm (64”) across and 82 cm (32”) high, excluding borders.
