Birl Shawl

Birl Shawl is a triangular shawl knitted top down with integrated i-cord edging. Increases are created by adding a yarn over at both edges, and larger eyelets at the centre to form the shawl’s spine. Eyelet rows are placed between bands of simple stocking stitch as both a decorative element and to give options for fringe placement upon completion.  

When all twelve eyelet rows have been worked, the shawl is finished with a stretchy cast off, and the work is washed and blocked. Once completely dry, the fringe can be added to the last eyelet row to create the fringed border, however, if preferred, additional layers of fringing can be added to create a more exaggerated effect. Options for both have been included. 

The samples have been knitted using an alpaca, linen and silk blend, which provides drape and movement to the finished piece, perfect for adorning shoulders as summer evenings begin to cool. And yes, also perfect for dancing.

Yarn used: Ginger Twist Studio Sweet Flax, 400m/437yds per 100g.
