Holding the Layers of Grief: A Comprehensive Interactive Toolkit for Therapists
Holding the Layers of Grief
A Comprehensive Interactive Toolkit for Therapists
Supporting healing while honoring the whole relationship.
Grief is rarely one thing. It can hold love, relief, anger, guilt, humor, and longing all at once, and it often arrives on top of losses that came before. Holding the Layers of Grief gives you a flexible, session-ready toolkit that follows the client instead of a fixed set of stages. There is no requirement to forgive, find meaning, or “move on.”
Part of the Beyond the Surface Clinical Tools collection by EWOL, created by Shanita Wade, MA, LPC.
Who This Is For
- Licensed therapists and counselors who support clients through death loss, ambiguous loss, anticipatory grief, and other significant losses
- Clinicians who want flexible structure and prefer to follow the client rather than move through fixed stages
- Therapists working with complicated or layered grief, including cumulative losses, traumatic loss, and relationships that held both love and difficulty
- Clinicians in virtual or in-person settings who want something they can use on screen together or print for a client to take home
- Supervisors and clinicians in training who want a clear, organized framework for thinking about grief, assessment, and referral (use under appropriate supervision)
This tool is built for qualified therapists. It is not a self-help product for the general public.
What You Get
- 106 guide sections, including nine client handouts
- 32 interactive exercises that can be skipped, revisited, cleared individually, or printed blank
- 14 flexible pathways, so you can start where the client is today
- Eight interactive visual maps. Select an area to open a prompt and a related exercise. Download each map as an SVG or PNG.
- Therapist support sections on assessment, prolonged grief, traumatic loss, risk, formulation, and referral
- Tools for the work itself: a grief check-in, memory collection, significant date plans, present-moment support, and session reflections
Built for Real Sessions
Therapist view and Client view. Use Therapist view for clinical support, or switch to Client view to hide the therapist guide sections while you work together on screen.
Memory work with room for the whole relationship. Warmth, complicated feelings, lessons, advice, humor, and ordinary moments all belong here.
Date plans that meet hard days. Each plan includes before, during, and afterward, plus a lower-demand Plan B for days when the first plan is too much.
Session reflections. Select the exercises you want and send the client home with a focused takeaway.
Assessment and Direction Support
- Grief experience assessment: a non-scored interview covering context, 14 experience domains, descriptive patterns and effects, client priorities, and a printable summary
- Cumulative grief: chosen loss entries, approximate timing, secondary changes, present demands, and one chosen thread to focus on. Counts do not measure severity.
- Grief patterns: familiar responses and movement, with no fixed stage or cycle
- Therapist session direction: 14 flexible directions, each with questions, intervention steps, cautions, related exercises, review, closure, and a shared reflection
Privacy by Design
Responses are temporary by default, and nothing leaves the page. There is no cloud account, remote submission, or analytics. To keep responses, you can deliberately turn on device saving or export a JSON backup and import it later. Please use initials or a chosen description rather than confidential clinical information. This is not a clinical record system and has no HIPAA BAA.
Print, Share, and Use Offline
Dedicated print buttons cover exercises, plans, memories, reflections, handouts, and graphics. Your browser can print to paper or save as PDF. The tool is a single HTML file with its own images, graphics, and guide content, so it works offline in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
