When You Can't Let Go
When You Can't Let Go
A guided workbook for making sense of a relationship that has ended
It's over. You know that. But your mind hasn't caught up yet.
The checking. The re-reading of old messages. The conversations you keep having in your head at 2am. The message you've typed and deleted four times tonight.
That isn't weakness, and it isn't something to be embarrassed about. It's grief with nowhere to go — and this workbook is a structured way through it.
What this is
42 pages of guided exercises, written in the order I'd actually use them with a client. Some pages are there to read. Some are there to write in. Some are coping tools for the moment the urge hits, the wave arrives, or the day flattens you.
There's no advice to "just move on", and nothing about getting them back.
What's inside
Part One — Steadying. Where you are right now, why it hurts this much, what the checking is actually costing you.
Part Two — The relationship as it really was. Not the highlights reel your mind keeps replaying. The whole of it, including your part in it.
Part Three — My patterns. Where your way of loving was learned, and how to catch it in action.
Part Four — Grieving and coping. Riding the urge, a plan for the low days, and permission to call this what it is.
Part Five — Who I am now. Your values, your non-negotiables, the unsent letter, and what a good relationship would actually look like for you.
Part Six — Closing. Looking back at where you started, and what you're taking forward.
Plus an appendix: Which page do I need right now? — so on a bad night you don't have to work out where to turn.
Format
Fillable PDF, so you can type straight into it on a phone, tablet or laptop. Plus a print version if you'd rather write by hand.
£7.19 including VAT. Yours to keep, worked through at your own pace.
Who it's for
Adults going through a break-up, separation or divorce — however it ended, and however long ago. Whether you were left, you left, it was mutual, or you still don't know what happened.
Who it isn't for
If you were hurt, controlled or frightened in this relationship, this isn't the right kind of help — not because you're beyond help, but because you deserve more than written exercises. In the UK: Refuge's National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247, Respect Men's Advice Line 0808 8010 327, Galop 0800 999 5428.
If the person you're grieving died, this isn't the right book — much of it works on the possibility that they might return. Cruse Bereavement Support: 0808 808 1677.
Who wrote it
I'm Jamie Longson, a BACP-registered counsellor in Manchester. I've written this the way I talk in the room: plain language, no jargon, no false promises.
My BACP registration describes me, not this workbook. The workbook itself is not endorsed, accredited or recognised by BACP.
This workbook offers guided self-reflection. It isn't therapy, and it isn't a substitute for it.
