What do you do for fun when you're an elder dragon living in the time of mortals? You get your friends together, make some characters and set off into the world for a game of Dragons in Dungeons of course!

Our four would-be heroes 'coincidentally' meet in the small town of Yemlic, surprising the locals with the gathering of an Orc, Dwarf, Elf and a Human, before they sniff out the signs of their first adventure. Something's lurking in the forest, and it's taking the villagers at night!

Will the brave adventurers rise to the challenge and return a sense of peace and safety to the village? Will the villagers have to learn not to go into the forest at night? Or worse, will the heroes fall to the very evil they sought to defeat? Can they do all this without giving in to their Draconic nature and eating all the sheep? Since this is an adventure story, probably the first one, but you never can tell these days!

Most definitely unexpected

I'm not sure what I expected when I started this book. I am so confused, but in an unexpectedly satisfactory way.
This is a fantasy adventure, okay? It 100% is, and we have a diverse cast of characters on a quest, fighting scenes, sorcery, and some great dialogue. All the awesome things we love in a classical fantasy adventure novel. But then there are those tidbits of weird information. Glimpses of "something else" going on. You end up wondering if you missed something, or if this all going to end up in one big reveal at the end. Which we got, but not *everything* was revealed.
This should be frustrating, but it's not. Or rather just a little.
Might need that book II... I can't live like this.

Fast-paced, lighthearted and fun read

This is an entertaining crossbreed between LitRPG and funtasy with a slight twist.
The Dark Forest if Mysterious Evils is a short and very fun read with a strong D&D vibe (the title of the series might be a small giveaway). Four characters are coming together in a tavern (where else) to find some adventures. The characters seem to be typical archetypes used in roleplaying games: An Orc barbarian, a Dwarven fighter, an Elven healer and a human wizard. But with the twist they don’t necessarily act like expected. I immensely enjoyed how David Heyman toys with the readers’ expectations and even more how the characters act out of character. The best examples are the wizard Gnorman and to a lesser extent Derrin the dwarf, both acting often as typical roleplaying newbies would.

The Dark Forest if Mysterious Evils is a fast-paced, lighthearted and fun read and you don’t need to be a RPG-fan to enjoy the story.

A funny light-hearted fantasy adventure

This is the perfect book if you want to read a fun adventure over a few hours as it's a relatively short read (120 pages) but the writing flows nicely and it's very entertaining.

It follows the exploits of an intrepid group of adventurers, including a barbarian orc, a healing elven bard, a warrior dwarf, and a powerful wizard, all in search of a quest.

This light hearted fantasy plays out as an RPG (alike Dungeons and dragons/Pathfinder/Heroquest...) giving all the enjoyment of the quest itself, as well as the quirks of new players understanding the game rules, character levelling up, facing new enemies, and discovering and sharing loot. This had lots of comedy moments throughout too particularly Gnormans antics and acting skills.

Would thoroughly recommend this read for any fantasy lovers or RPG lovers, and I'm excited to read more of this merry gang of misfits adventures.
