In Spiritual Gifts, Michael E.B. Maher distinguishes three categories of gifts in the church: ministry gifts (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers), function gifts (given to every believer for their role in the body), and spiritual gifts (manifestations of the Holy Spirit’s power). He focuses on the nine spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12, noting they are actually seven distinct gifts (the three speaking gifts—prophecy, tongues, and interpretation—are facets of one gift).

Maher explains that spiritual gifts are available only to believers who are baptized in the Holy Spirit (evidenced by speaking in tongues). Unlike ministry and function gifts, spiritual gifts are given to those who earnestly desire them, for the edification of the church, not for selfish ambition. Gifts are imparted either directly from heaven or through the laying on of hands by those who already possess the same gift.

Crucially, the Holy Spirit Himself initiates and operates the gifts as He wills, not the believer. The believer’s role is to remain open, obedient, and not quench the Spirit. Each gift comes with a specific measure of faith, and believers must steward their gift faithfully. Neglecting prayer, God’s word, or holiness diminishes the anointing. Maher warns churches against despising prophecies or structuring meetings to exclude the Spirit’s movement, lest they lose their lamp stand.
