A recipe reading set for KS3, KS4 and post 16 SEND learners, in grams and millilitres: a scrambled egg wrap on the hob, no cook peanut butter oat bites, and a one page measuring guide covering scales, a jug, spoons, oven temperatures in °C and gas marks, and doubling and halving.

Why I made this

Cooking is where a lot of learners first see weighing and measuring do something real. A recipe card asks them to read a short form, use the scales or a jug, and follow the steps in order, and it shows them straight away if something got missed. There is one hob recipe and one no cook recipe, so the set works in rooms with and without a kitchen.

What's included

• Teacher page with a short note on the UK details

• Words to know: 10 key words with pictures (recipe, ingredients, weigh, millilitres, teaspoon, tablespoon, method, hob, chill, double)

• 3 practice documents: two recipe cards with allergens in bold, and a measuring guide with a "which tool?" panel and a doubling chart

• 12 Level A questions with pictures and three choices

• The same 12 questions at Level B, with open answers and room to show working

• A real life task: double the oat bites for 24 people, then tick off a before I cook checklist

• Answer key that shows where to find every answer

Two levels, same questions

Level A suits learners who need visual support and choices. Level B suits learners ready to write and show working. Because the questions match, the whole group can work from the same documents and go through the answers together.

How I use it

Read the card together before anyone touches a bowl, and have learners point to each ingredient as you read it. The "which tool?" panel is worth doing with the real scales and jug on the table. If you have no kitchen, the oat bites only need a fridge.

Who it is for

KS4, sixth form, FE college and post 16 SEND groups, learners on SEN Support, and supported internship or independent living programmes.

Please note

The oat bites contain peanuts. Check your setting's allergy policy before making them in class.
