The first published version of Deck the Halls comes from the early Welsh folk song Nos Galon, sung to celebrate the New Year. The English lyrics were written by Thomas Oliphant, but he retained the repeated “fal la la….” from the original song. Originally, melodies such as Deck the Halls were usually dances and not songs. The accompanying tune would have been used as a setting for any verses of appropriate metre. This gave me the idea of using a less traditional Christmas Carol style, altering the theme to fit a Brazilian Bossa Nova. This arrangement has migrated from the original setting by altering the chord progression and lengthening the note values to fit an upbeat Bossa.
