John-John the pug, who features in Friday Night Fever, book 1 in The Seventies Collective, is stocky, round as he is long, and possessed of a forehead that is a roadmap of deep, furry wrinkles. His under-bite is an orthodontist's wet dream.

He slobbers. When he jumps on the spot, the slobber arcs off his chin in all directions. Standing in his vicinity requires awareness of the mucus radius and to be wearing more than socks. He also bites.

Despite all this, he is adored by his owner, Mrs. de Graaf, who calls him her darling, peppers his nose with kisses, and appears unbothered by where that nose has just been.

While not an easy dog to love, John-John didn’t deserve what happened to him.
