Morwen Shawl
Once upon a time there was a little purple ball of yarn. Her knitter
had told her that she and her sister, the little gray ball of yarn,
would grow up to be a huge lace shawl, and then they would
travel almost 6000 km – from Switzerland to Canada - to live with
the knitter’s best friend. In Canada they would be part of a live
action roleplaying costume and live through many, many adventures.
The little purple ball of yarn loved that and couldn’t wait to
start adventuring, but growing up took so long. The little purple
ball of yarn became impatient. Then, one day, her knitter took her
on a trip to Ticino and knit on the balcony of the hotel they were
staying at. The little purple ball of yarn finally saw her chance to
get some adventures. So she jumped off the balcony table, rolled through the balustrade and landed on the awning of the restaurant below.
But her adventure wasn’t over yet. She kept rolling over the edge of the awning and from there into a tree.
The hotel was built on a hill, so while one side of the restaurant was on the first floor, the other side was high above the street. The tree in which the little purple ball of yarn had landed was several meters below the restaurant, but also several meters above the street - and she was stuck. What an adventure!
The groundkeeper of the hotel was the only one who could get to the trees, but it was his day off.
So the little purple ball of yarn spent the whole evening and night in the tree and amused the restaurant guests as well as hundreds of people on Facebook while her knitter worried about her.
But the next morning the groundkeeper came and saved her. She was reunited with her knitter, the groundkeeper got a nice tip (and a good story to tell about the crazy knitter in the hotel who lost her ball of yarn in a tree), the purple ball of yarn continued to grow into a beautiful shawl with her gray sister and they lived happily ever after.
Morwen is a Faroese shawl knit from the top down. It can be easily adjusted to the size you like. The pattern includes instructions for a ruffled and a regular border as well as an i-cord and a regular bind off that can be mixed and matched as you like. The sample shows ruffled border and i-cord bind off.

Es war einmal ein kleines, lila Wollknäuel. Seine Strickerin hatte ihm gesagt, dass es zusammen mit seiner Schwester, dem kleinen, grauen Wollknäuel, zu einem riesigen Lacetuch heran-wachsen würde. Das kleine, lila Wollknäuel sah endlich seine Chance auf Abenteuer gekommen! Es sprang vom Balkontisch, rollte durch die Balustrade und landete auf der Markise des Restaurants unter dem Balkon. Aber das Abenteuer war noch nicht vorbei! Es rollte weiter, über den Rand der Markise und von dort in einen Baum.
Das Hotel war auf einem Hügel gebaut, so dass eine Seite des Restaurants im Erdgeschoss war, aber die andere Seite hoch über der Strasse. Der Baum in dem das kleine, lila Wollknäuel gelandet war, war mehrere Meter unter dem Restaurant, aber auch mehrere Me-ter über der Strasse—und es steckte fest. Wa für ein Abenteuer!
Der Hausmeister des Hotels war der einzige der zu den Bäumen gelangen konnte, aber es war sein freier Tag. Also verbrachte das kleine, lila Wollknäuel den ganzen Abend und die Nacht in dem Baum und amüsierte die Restaurantgäste und viele Hundert Menschen auf Facebook, während seine Strickerin sich Sorgen machte.
Aber am nächsten Morgen kam der Hausmei-ster und rettete es. Es wurde mit seiner Strick-erin wiedervereinigt, der Hausmeister bekam ein schönes Trinkgeld (und eine gute Geschichte über die verrückte Strickerin im Ho-tel, die ihr Wollknäuel in einem Baum verloren hatte), das kleine, lila Wollknäuel wuchs zusam-men mit seiner grauen Schwester weiter zu einem wunderschönen Tuch heran, und wenn sie nicht gestorben sind, dann leben sie noch heute.
Morwen ist ein von oben nach unten gestricktes Faröer Tuch. Es kann leicht an die gewünschte Grösse angepasst werden. Die Anleitung ent-häIt Varianten für eine gerüschte und eine gerade Bordüre sowie einen Icord– und einen normalen Abschluss die nach Belieben kom-biniert werden können. Das gezeigte Tuch hat eine gerüschte Bordüre und einen Icord-Abschluss.
