The FMC Corporation developed and constructed the M113, a fully tracked armored personnel carrier (APC). The M113 was the first mass-produced aluminum-hulled combat vehicle. Its aluminum armor was meant to be thick enough to protect the crew and passengers from small arms fire while being light enough to be air-transportable and modestly amphibious, making it far lighter than previous similar vehicles.
