The Essential SNA Guide

This 162 page guide was created to support Special Needs Assistants at every stage, whether you are preparing for interview or already working in the role. Developed over four years and shaped by the experiences of hundreds of SNAs, it brings together practical guidance, real interview preparation, and a clear understanding of the SNA role. Reflecting current interview trends, neuroaffirming practice and evolving expectations within schools, it goes beyond traditional SNA interview question and answer guides. It also supports SNAs in navigating school life and sustaining themselves once they are in post.

🔍 Inside, you will find:

✔️ 123 SNA interview questions drawn from real interview experiences shared by our wonderful community of Special Needs Assistants

✔️ Detailed sample answers, all grounded in current NCSE and Department of Education guidance, while also encouraging reflective discussion around compliance-based approaches still present within school practice and training.

✔️ A clear breakdown of what schools are actually looking for in interviews with a sample marking criteria

✔️ Guidance on working across mainstream primary, autism classes, special schools, and post-primary settings, along with what you need to know for interviews with DEIS and ETB Schools.

✔️ Extensive glossary of almost 90 commonly used terms, approaches, organisations and concepts relevant to SNA practice

✔️ A strong focus on supporting regulation, understanding behaviour, and working effectively under the direction of the class teacher

✔️ Clear explanations of boundaries, safeguarding, and professional expectations

✔️ What to expect once you are in the role, including contracts, day-to-day responsibilities, and how to approach the position with confidence from the start

Created by an experienced SNA and Career Support Advisor with over 12 years’ experience across primary and post-primary settings, this resource is grounded in professional experience, lived understanding of neurodivergent students, and ongoing learning.

Whether you are new to the role or looking to strengthen your practice, this guide will help you approach both interview and day-to-day work with clarity and confidence.

✨ A bit about me:

I’m Lisa, a neurodivergent Career Support Advisor and SNA with over 12 years’ experience across primary and post-primary schools, and a proud mum to a neurodivergent boy. My work is shaped not only by professional experience, but also by lived experience of neurodivergence, both personally and as a parent. Living and learning alongside my son has pushed me to question outdated approaches and fully commit to regulation-first, neuroaffirming practice, while sharing this understanding with SNAs so students can receive the support they need to feel safe, understood, and able to thrive. Alongside my work in schools, I also have a qualification background in HR and Inclusive Education.
