This book is not about treating back pain — or any other body pain.

It is about understanding the root cause of your pain (which has created a structural weakness somewhere in your body), and understanding how the way you live repeatedly affects how your body compensates for that weakness, leading to pain somewhere in your body — most often in the lower back — and how changing the way you live (without putting your life on hold) can reduce — and in many cases remove — that pain from your life.

I have three collapsed vertebrae in my spine — the root cause of my back pain — and as a result, I lived with persistent lower-back pain for more than two decades.


However, I was able to reduce my lower-back pain — and in most situations virtually eliminate it — not through medication, therapy, or exercises, but by learning how my everyday body movements, positions, and habits — including how I get out of bed — along with my non-body movements, including how I think, were quietly pushing my spine’s stabilizing muscles beyond their reduced capacity as they tried to protect my spine. It was this ongoing overworking of my stabilizing muscles that caused my lower-back pain.

This book explains what I learned — and how I applied it — in practical, everyday terms.
