Weeping Rock is a long, flowing cowl, covered with stranded colorwork meant to evoke my favorite place: the semi-arid lands of the southwestern United States. The amazing rock formations there are in such beautiful shades of red, pink, and cream. One of the most stunning locations in that area is Zion National Park in Utah. There is a trail there that climbs steeply and leads to a rock alcove where water drips out of the rocks like they’re weeping. It is so beautiful, and I tried to emulate that beauty in the colorwork of Weeping Rock.
Weeping Rock is knit in the round in a long tube with all over stranded colorwork in three colors (but only ever two in each round), and then Kitchener stitch is used to graft the ends together.
Yarn
Fingering weight yarn in the following amounts:
CC1: Approx 220 yd (205 m)
CC2: Approx 400 yd (370 m)
CC3: Approx 230 yd (215 m)
Sample used Madelinetosh Twist Light (75% Superwash Merino Wool / 25% nylon, 420 yards / 384 meters), 1 skein each in colorways Rocinante (CC1), Natural (CC2), and Oscuro (CC3)
Gauge
30 sts and 24 rows / 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stranded colorwork
Tools
2 sets of size 4 (3.5 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needles (or size needed to meet gauge)
1 stitch marker
Crochet hook for provisional cast on
Scrap yarn
Tapestry needle
