The book examines what the title calls “paper genocide”: documentary processes through which Indigenous identity could be erased, suppressed, or administratively reclassified in historical records. Rather than assuming that every discrepancy resulted from the same cause, the book teaches students to investigate the specific laws, institutions, records, jurisdictions, and historical circumstances involved.
Students learn how to investigate census records, birth and death certificates, marriage records, deeds, land records, probate files, court records, church registers, military records, newspapers, cemeteries, tax records, photographs, family documents, and other historical sources. The program then teaches how to distinguish a source from evidence, evaluate informants, identify errors and alterations, compare independent sources, resolve conflicting information, and construct an organized evidence inventory.
Most importantly, this book teaches a disciplined rule:
Do not make the evidence say more than the evidence actually says.
