Teacher Handout
A simple, practical teacher handout designed to help school staff understand how best to support a child who experiences language and/or processing difficulties.
“My Child Learns Best When...” gives parents a clear way to communicate the classroom supports that can make learning more accessible, without overwhelming the teacher with a lengthy document.
The handout includes practical strategies such as:
• Giving instructions one step at a time
• Allowing extra processing time
• Using visual supports
• Checking understanding effectively
• Breaking larger tasks into smaller steps
• Supporting new vocabulary
• Recognising when a child may know the answer but need extra time to find the words
It also highlights some of the things a teacher might notice in the classroom, including slower responses, difficulty following multi-step instructions, word-finding difficulties and appearing distracted while actually processing language.
There is space to add the child’s name, class and teacher, making it easy to print and share at the beginning of the school year, after a parent-teacher meeting or whenever additional classroom support may be helpful.
