These simple crochet bonding squares are a quick project to work up and are fantastic for donating to charities. Handmade bonding squares are typically used by new families who have an infant in the NICU.

These crochet squares help the mother and baby bond through scent, one of the baby's most developed senses. One crochet square is placed against the mother's skin and one with the baby. The squares are then swapped, so the baby can learn momma's scent. 

While this crochet square pattern is primarily meant to be used to create and donate bonding squares to your local charities, you can also use this textured, diagonal crochet square to create a blanket. You could use this crochet square pattern to create many squares and seam them together or you could continue following the pattern until the blanket reaches your desired size.

Advanced Beginner - Crocheters looking to follow this pattern should know how to:

• Read a crochet pattern - There is NOT a video tutorial for this crochet pattern
• Work the basic stitches: Chain, single crochet and double crochet
• Work in Rows
• Create a chain space and work into it
• Place several stitches into a chain space
• Work into the Back Loop Only (BLO)

SIZE

Approximately 5 inches x 5 inches. Size is listed after blocking. The size of this crochet square pattern is very easy to customize.

YARN REQUIRED

You will need DK (Light - 3) weight Cotton or Cotton blend yarn. Cotton or cotton blend yarn that is soft to touch is great for babies.

You will need approximately 1.25 ounces/ 30 grams/ 40 yards for both squares.

Note: You can use a different weight or fiber if you prefer, but typically NICU's will require a specific fiber. Soft cotton yarn is usually a good bet but check with your local NICU if you're planning to donate several pairs to ensure what you make will be accepted.

Yarn Used: Bernat Softee Baby Cotton in colorway Aqua Mist (60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic)

If you alter the pattern in any way, including changing the yarn weight or fiber, your yarn usage will be different than listed.
