Writing Check: A Visual Self-Monitoring Guide
Look • Check • Fix • Keep Writing ✏️
Writing can involve so many things at once — forming letters, keeping a consistent size, spacing words, organising ideas, remembering punctuation and making sure our writing is easy to read.
Writing Check is a practical, student-friendly visual guide designed to help children and young people develop greater awareness of their own writing and build confidence with self-checking.
Rather than focusing on “perfect” handwriting, this resource encourages students to pause, look at their work and identify what is working well and what they may want to check or adjust.
What's included?
This resource includes 4 age-appropriate visual writing check guides:
- 🌱 Foundation / Prep : Simple visual prompts focusing on early writing foundations, letter formation, spacing, directionality and communicating ideas.
- ✏️ Grades 1–3 : Support with letter formation, letter size, spacing, alignment, sentence structure, capital letters and punctuation.
- 📖 Grades 4–6: A broader focus on legibility, consistency, written content, organisation and editing.
- 🎓 Secondary School (Years 7–12): A more age-respectful self-check focusing on content, organisation, presentation, editing and overall readability.
Designed for independent self-checking
The guides use simple language, visual prompts and checkboxes to encourage students to become more active participants in their writing.
Students can use the guide to ask:
- Can I read my writing easily?
- Are my letters and words easy to see?
- Is my writing organised?
- Did I include what I needed to?
- Did I check my spelling, capitals and punctuation?
- What is one thing I did well?
- What is one thing I can check next time?
🖨️ Easy to print, laminate & reuse
The guides are designed to be practical for everyday use.
They can be:
- Printed and laminated for repeated use
- Kept on a student's desk
- Used during writing activities
- Added to a writing station
- Used at home for homework or writing practice
- Incorporated into OT or therapy sessions
- Used as a visual prompt during independent work
👩🏫 Who is this resource for?
- Educators & teachers: Use it as a classroom visual, writing-station resource or prompt for independent self-monitoring.
- Parents & families: Use it at home to provide simple, consistent prompts without needing to correct every aspect of a child's writing.
- Occupational therapists & other therapists: Use it as a practical visual support during handwriting and written-output intervention or as part of home/school recommendations.
- Students: Use it to develop self-monitoring skills and take an active role in checking their own work.
🌿 A neuroaffirming approach to writing
There isn't one “perfect” way to write.
The goal is not for every student's handwriting to look the same. Instead, this resource focuses on functional, meaningful and readable writing, while supporting students to recognise their strengths and identify areas they may want to work on.
Small changes and simple visual reminders can make writing feel more manageable.
