Having previously been a Registered Manager myself, I remember that feeling. It wasn't necessarily about not knowing the answers. Sometimes it was more about wanting to make sure that, when the pressure was on, I could actually access what I knew and explain it confidently without nerves getting in the way.

I've always found short, punchy bits of revision much more useful than trying to sit and absorb huge amounts of information at once. Something that gives you a question, a few mental anchors and gets you thinking about how you'd answer it from your own experience.

I've brought together two resources that support slightly different things.

The Registered Manager Interview Playbook is there for those moments before interview when you just want to practise, organise your thoughts and build confidence.

It includes Ofsted-style practice questions, short mental anchors, key areas to think about and simple prompts to help you retrieve what you already know and connect your answers back to your own practice.

It's deliberately not a book of scripted answers.

I wouldn't want somebody trying to remember my answer in their interview. I want it to help you find your answer.

Alongside it, I've included The Exceptional Children's Home Manager E-Book.

This goes a little deeper and is less about passing an interview and more about building confidence in the manager you want to be.

It explores the human and therapeutic side of leadership - culture, relationships, psychological safety, challenging poor practice, reflective learning, staff wellbeing, accountability, incidents, complaints, DoL and least-restrictive practice - with examples, reflections and simple analogies throughout.

A lot of it comes back to something I've become increasingly passionate about:

What sits underneath the behaviour?

And that applies to children, staff teams and sometimes us as managers too.

Having been an RM, I know how much responsibility can sit on your shoulders and how easy it is to question yourself, particularly when you're stepping into the role or preparing to demonstrate your knowledge to Ofsted.

These resources aren't here to tell experienced managers how to do their jobs.

They're simply resources I would have valued having myself - something to help you revise in manageable pieces, reflect on your leadership, recognise how much you already know and hopefully go into that interview with a little more confidence.

Because ultimately, getting through the interview matters.

But what matters much more is what happens afterwards.

Creating safer teams, stronger relationships and homes where children feel heard, understood and genuinely cared for.
