Sore throats are common — but not always simple

Sore throat is one of the most common presentations across urgent, primary and front-door care. Most cases are self-limiting, but clinicians still need to confidently recognise when symptoms suggest something more significant.

This practical CPD module has been designed to help clinicians assess sore throat presentations safely and consistently, using a simple front-door question:

Is this simple, bacterial or dangerous?

The course explores relevant throat anatomy, focused history-taking, examination, viral and bacterial presentations, FeverPAIN and Centor scoring, potential investigations, antibiotic decision-making and safety-

netting using the AIRWAY mnemonic.

Rather than just listing guidelines, this module focuses on real-world clinical reasoning: what to ask, what to look for, when to reassure, when to prescribe, and when to escalate.

This course is designed for clinicians working in urgent care, UTCs, primary care, ED streaming, out-of-hours services and other front-door settings.

Clear safety-netting patients can understand

Good safety-netting is an essential part of sore throat management.

This module introduces the AIRWAY mnemonic, a simple and memorable framework designed to help clinicians explain sore throat red flags clearly and consistently.

Learners will be able to recognise when symptoms move beyond a routine sore throat and provide clear advice about when to seek urgent help — including breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow, worsening one-sided throat pain, neck swelling, trismus and systemic deterioration.

This helps turn vague advice such as “come back if worse” into practical, patient-friendly safety-netting that supports safer front-door care.

AIRWAY mnemonic developed by Front Door Clinical Education. Red-flag content adapted from NICE, ENT UK and GIRFT guidance.

This sore throat module is Module 2 of 3 in the Front Door Clinical Education ENT series, following the ear pain module and sitting alongside the upcoming nasal presentations module.

This course is purchased as a standalone CPD module and includes access to the teaching content, downloadable resources and reflection prompts.

The ENT series is designed to build practical confidence in common front-door presentations, including:

  • Ear pain — otitis externa vs otitis media
  • Sore throats — simple, bacterial or dangerous?
  • Nasal presentations — congestion, epistaxis and red flags

For ongoing learning, the Front Door Clinical Education membership adds access to additional CPD content, clinical updates, downloadable tools and future bite-sized resources to support continued development beyond individual modules.

Very informative

I recently completed the Sore Throats in Urgent Care: Assessment, Red Flags and Antibiotic Decisions training and found it exceptionally useful, practical and clearly pitched at real-world clinical decision-making. The session gave a strong structure for assessing sore throat presentations, helping distinguish between self-limiting viral illness, bacterial infection and more serious complications, with a clear focus on safe escalation when red flags are present. I particularly valued the emphasis on focused history, examination and the use of FeverPAIN and Centor as decision-support tools rather than stand-alone answers, as well as the balanced discussion around antibiotic stewardship, delayed prescribing and safety-netting. The AIRWAY mnemonic was especially memorable and will be very helpful in day-to-day practice for giving patients clear, specific advice about when to seek urgent help. Overall, this was an excellent, evidence-based and highly applicable training session that strengthened my confidence in assessing sore throats safely and appropriately in urgent care settings.
