The Watchful Body: Understanding Health Anxiety

Health anxiety can look like repeated checking, reassurance seeking, symptom searching, or finding it difficult to trust reassurance once it has been given.

The Watchful Body is a reflective therapeutic resource designed to help clients explore what may be happening beneath those patterns. Rather than treating checking or reassurance seeking as behaviours to simply stop, it offers a way of understanding how attention, uncertainty and nervous system protection can become caught in a repeating cycle.

Created for use alongside therapeutic work, the resource supports curiosity about the pattern without reinforcing shame or suggesting that the person's experience is irrational.

This resource may be useful when working with clients who...

• Find their attention repeatedly drawn towards physical sensations, symptoms or fears about their health

• Experience temporary relief after checking, researching or seeking reassurance, only for the worry to return

• Find uncertainty around health particularly difficult to tolerate

• Struggle to trust reassurance, even after medical assessment

• Feel frustrated, ashamed or exhausted by how much space health worries are taking up

• Would benefit from understanding the protective process beneath the pattern before exploring change

A different starting point

Health anxiety is often approached through what someone is doing: checking less, searching less, asking for reassurance less.

The Watchful Body begins somewhere slightly different.

It invites clients to notice what the checking may be trying to provide, what happens before and after reassurance, how uncertainty is experienced, and what their nervous system may have learnt about staying alert to possible threat.

The aim is not to persuade someone that there is nothing to worry about. It is to create enough understanding for a different relationship with uncertainty to begin to emerge.

What's included

The Watchful Body: Print Version

A six-page reflective client resource with ruled space for writing by hand.

The Watchful Body: Fillable Version

The same six-page resource with digital text fields, suitable for online therapy or clients who prefer typing directly into the PDF.

Working with Health Anxiety: Therapist Companion

A practitioner guide offering context for the themes explored within the resource, including the checking and reassurance cycle, nervous system responses, uncertainty and considerations for introducing and using the resource therapeutically.

Ways you might use it

The resource can be introduced during a session, completed collaboratively, offered between sessions, or used as a starting point for further therapeutic exploration.

There is no expectation that every prompt is completed. Clients can move through the resource at their own pace and leave anything that does not feel useful or relevant.

It may be particularly helpful where understanding the function of a pattern feels more appropriate than moving immediately towards strategies for changing it.

This resource is not...

• A diagnostic or assessment tool

• A replacement for appropriate medical investigation or advice

• A protocol for treating health anxiety

• Designed to reassure clients that physical symptoms are psychological

• A substitute for individual clinical judgement
