On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand

Trumpet Duet

Edward Mote, William B. Bradbury
Eddie Lewis Arranger

My duet version of this classic hymn, On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand, tries to capture that feel of trusting in Christ as the solid rock we build our lives on. I don’t always get it right, but that’s what these arrangements are supposed to be. I am trying to keep them true to the original intentions of the hymnist. I am not trying to make them “more interesting” or to “jazz them up”.

That said, I don’t have anything against the practice of making hymns more interesting with compositional techniques. Not at all. I’ve done quite a bit of that myself. I enjoy writing that way, and people enjoy listening to it.

But sometimes I also yearn for something simpler and more sincere. That’s what these Trumpet Hymn Duets are for.

About the Arrangement

This is one of the easier Trumpet Hymn Duets that I’ve written so far. The highest note in On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand is G above the staff and the rhythms and phrases are all very accessible. I would put it at a very solid intermediate level. Most high school students should be fine playing this arrangement.

On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand is idea for most church services. There are no modern harmonies or jazzy treatments of the rhythms. The arrangement sticks very close to the original mood and harmonies of the hymn.
