This book is the product two dedicated individuals.  Alan D. Selig (the Great-great grandson of James W. Jessee) transcribed the original diaries.  William P. LaBounty, of The McLean County Genealogical Society, edited those transcriptions into this book.

212 pages, with the forward including family photos of the Jessee family, a photo of representative pages that were transcribed, a history of the 8th Infantry led by Colonel Richard Olglesby (later Governor of Illinois), and a map of the action.

James Jessee takes us day by day thru the life of a soldier and what was endured.  Details of how often paid and amounts, weather, sickness, casualties, deaths, and suicides. 

December 31, 1863  "Thus ended the old year of "/63 and two years and five months of our term of service.  and hard service too in which we was engaged with the rebs in six battles and one seige of forty seven days duration (vickburg) marched several hundreds of miles carried heavy knap sacks and lied on one fourth rations part of the time suffered much, and endured much, and yet the rebellion has not been crushed."
