Rio Grande Valley Birding Itinerary

This birding itinerary explores the full length of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, one of North America’s premier birding regions and the meeting ground of U.S. and Neotropical birds. Over three to seven days, birders move east to west—from the coastal lagoons of South Padre Island through the riparian forests of Weslaco and Mission to the brush country of Starr and Zapata Counties. The route targets nearly all signature Valley specialties, including Green Jay, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Plain Chachalaca, Great Kiskadee, Clay-Colored Thrush, and Morelet's Seedeater. Designed for efficiency and habitat diversity, it combines accessible public hotspots, World Birding Center sites, and refuges to deliver 150–260 possible species in a single trip.
