When you have that gorgeous single skein that needs to be enjoyed to the last inch, don’t overthink it. Just relax and play it by queer.

Pair your special skein with a contrasting color (or a few colors) and watch them play in soothing garter stitch wedges. The wedges are shaped with short rows, which means that you never work with more than one color at a time. You don’t even have to count your stitches or weigh your yarn, unless you want to!

Yarn Requirements

Two skeins of fingering weight yarn, MC and CC.

Sample details: one full skein of Marianated Yarns Practicality 75/25 (463yds/100g) as MC, and 80g of Manos del Uruguay Alegría (445yds/100g) as CC. The “Fruit Stripe Gum” colorway of the Marianated skein perfectly matches the pansexual pride flag!

  • 32” or 40” circular needle in size to obtain fabric of your liking. Suggested: US5/3.75mm
  • stitch markers
  • tapestry needle

Gauge: 5 sts in 1”/2.5cm}

Measured in unblocked, unstretched garter stitch. Not critical for a shawl, but a different gauge may affect yardage required or final size.

Sample dimensions after blocking: 73”/186cm tip to tip, 20”/50cm at deepest point

Technical Notes

This pattern is suitable for a knitter who is comfortable with increasing, decreasing, and short rows. A pattern key provides a complete list of stitches used. Some support provided for alternate finishes, color variations, and estimating yarn usage for those who prefer more planned projects.

This pattern has been key in my process of learning about financial accessibility and using privilege to redistribute resources, since its release in June 2019. All proceeds from the first month were donated to Rest for Resistance, The National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network (NQTTCN), and Queer Nature, organizations that center QTBIPOC needs and concerns. You can find the original statement here. This pattern also prompted me to make all of my patterns available on sliding scale pricing. Thank you for being a part of this journey!
