Laid Off? Layoff Budget & Runway Calculator + 30-Day Job Search Plan
Just laid off? Estimate how long your money could last, and follow a dated 30-day plan for your job search.
$7 one-time. One spreadsheet for Excel or Google Sheets. General estimates only, not financial or legal advice.
Why it helps
• See your situation in one place: savings, severance, other cash and expected benefits
• Compare your normal budget with a bare-bones budget and see how much cutting back saves each month
• Get an estimate of your runway in months and an approximate date your cash would run out (benefit rules vary by state, so check yours)
• Know what to do each day: a 30-day checklist dated from your last day of work
What you get
• Runway tab inputs: last day of work, cash savings, severance (after tax), other one-time cash, weekly unemployment benefit, number of benefit weeks, weeks until first payment, other monthly income, and a cash cushion to keep
• Bare-bones budget: Normal vs. Bare-Bones amounts for 15 expense lines, with monthly totals and savings from cutting back
• Runway results: total cash, average monthly benefit, monthly shortfall, runway on savings only (normal and bare-bones), and runway with benefits on a bare-bones budget (red under 3 months, yellow 3-6, green 6+)
• An approximate run-out date, a 36-month cash table (negative months in red) and a chart
• Job search progress on the Runway tab: tasks done, applications sent, networking messages, overdue tasks
• 30-Day Plan: Reset, Build, Apply, Interview and Review weeks. Tasks include filing for benefits, reading your separation paperwork, comparing health coverage, updating your resume and LinkedIn, a target company list, networking, applications, STAR stories and mock interviews. Done? dropdown plus Applications and Networking count columns; done rows turn green and overdue rows yellow.
• Instructions tab + 1-page Start Here PDF. The yellow DEMO numbers are fictional.
How it works
1. Open the file in Excel, or upload it to Google Drive and choose File > Save as Google Sheets.
2. Replace the DEMO numbers with yours (check your state for real benefit amounts).
3. Compare the normal and bare-bones budgets and note your runway estimate.
4. Work through the 30-Day Plan and log applications and messages.
